Visit to the ludwig museum

I visited the Museum Ludwig on thursday 2.11.2023. The museum Ludwig is a modern art museum in Cologne Germany. I saw all the exhibitions in the museum, but in this post chose 3 exhibitions to talk about in lenght.

Fusun Onur: Retrospective

Fusun Onur is a Turkish artist born and living in Istabul. Her signature in art is using everyday materials in her sculptures and paintings.

I hadn't heard of Fusun Onur before seeing the exhibition and it was the first exhibition we walked into in the museum. Her art was made of a lot of different fabrics and object, all having fun textures. The exhibition consistet of smaller paintings and sculptures as well as huge pieces that took over entire rooms. A lot of her work was made out of furniture and toys, Things you would find at home.

A piece of the exhibition that stuck in my mind the most was the piece called: Es war einmal... (Once upon a time...) It was one of her newer pieces, being finished in 2022. The piece tells the story of a Tomcat and a mouse who join forces on their way from Istanbul to Venice in order to save the world. The piece is a collection of scenes made with all kinds of materials and toys put up on 21 tables. The piece stuck with me, because even tho the story was not written down you could easily follow the cat's and mouse's journey just by looking at the pieces.

The Picasso collection
Museum Ludwig is known for having the biggest colection of Picasso's works in europe. The Spanish artist Pablo Picasso needs no introduction. He is known as one of the founders of cubism, but his works are very varied and he was a part of many art movements during his career. In the exhibitions there's not only the pieces of his signature well known style, but also his earlier work.
Goin into the exhibition i knew i would see a lot of Picasso pieces and was excited about it. I had never seen a Picasso in real life before. What i did not expect was 2 enire rooms with art filled with his sketches. There was so much to see and walking out of the room i thought that was it! I ended up being very wrong as i walked into multiple more rooms with Picasso's huge paintings as well as his sculptures. It was a really cool experience to get to see the works of one of the most well known modern artists.

Abstract tendensies
The museum was divided by different art movements. The one i decided to talk about more is the abstract exhibition. After the end of the second world war art in europe was faced with a new beginning. In the west all forms of figurative art were rejected since they were equated with works of nazi-art. Because of this abstract art gained popularity. The exhibition was mostly full of european pieces of abstract art. The pieces were huge impressive paintings with fun textures and colors.

At the end of this post i want to mention a few pieces i was really excited to see at the museum!

Yuyoi Kusama, Compulsion furniture, 1966                                                                                             Yuyoi Kusama is a japanese modern artist. She is known by her style of art being painted dots. Giant paintings, entire rooms and big sculptures filled with dots. Yayoi Kusama suffers with Hallucionations and she uses them to her advantage in her art. I have been a fan of her work for a while now, but never had the chance of seeing her work in person before. I was really excited to see her sculpture.

Roy Lichtenstein, M-Maybe (A girl's picture), 1965

Roy Lichtenstein was an american artist known for his comic style pop art paintings. You have definetly seen his works in ads or online before, which is why it was so cool seeing one of his most iconic paintings in the museum. I did not know the painting was so big before seeing it in real life. The painting is 152.4cm x 152.4cm
